Tourism Infrastructure Project

Due to the 2004 tsunami and all the destruction that had taken place in the island, the tourism industry in order to combat the situation much better, the Sri Lanka Tourist Board introduced the concept of tourism zones. The objective was to set specific guidelines and to manage these zones efficiently in order to avoid ad-hoc tourism development. For the purpose of marketing each of these zones, specific themes were introduced.

Kuchchaweli Beach Resort

Dedduwa Lake Resort

Dedduwa is located to the east of Bentota and it comprises of water bodies, marshy lands and abundant paddy lands.

The Dedduwa Lake project covering 1,800 hectares of wetland lies to the east of the present Bentota Holiday Resort. The development plan provides it to be linked by the re-opening of old waterways to Madhu Ganga 20 kilometers to the south and also developing the area surrounding the Dedduwa Lake.

Kalpitiya Project

Situated 150 km north of the capital of Colombo, the Kalpitiya region is one of the most beautiful coastal areas located in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. Kalpitiya is a peninsular that separates the Puttalam Lagoon from the Indian Ocean and is a Marine Sanctuary with a diversity of habitats ranging from bar reefs, flat coastal plains, saltpans, mangroves swamps, salt marshes and vast sand dune beaches.

Given the investment opportunities available in 2008, Sri Lanka Tourism launched the Kalpitiya Dutch Bay Resort Development Project.

Passikudah Resort

He said the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is assisting in the development of Kalkudah around the concept of 'rooms in homes' where the entire area would be identified as a resort with quality control assurances. This concept goes beyond the traditional resort definition of hotels but would still serve the tourists who would want to experience our local culture

The Ministry of Tourism has taken an initiative to promote lesser known attractions in all Provinces in the country. These attractions will be communicated to potential travellers and investors through the various media. Eg:- websites, printed materials etc.
